La teoria della presenza sociale riguarda l’efficacia con cui i media riescono a dare l’impressione della presenza fisica dell'interlocutore e a veicolare tutte le informazioni comportamentali che aiutano a decodificare correttamente il messaggio. Tali informazioni riguardano anche il linguaggio non verbale, le espressioni del volto, i gesti, il tono della voce e gli elementi del contesto, tutti dati presenti nella comunicazione faccia a faccia. Clark e Brennan hanno elaborato la teoria del terreno comune per descrivere il bisogno di condividere una serie di informazioni affinché una comunicazione possa aver luogo. Queste informazioni riguardano sia i codici digitali, quali la lingua e gli elementi del contesto, sia informazioni di tipo emotivo, cioè la condivisione, prevalentemente inconscia, di affetti. Per comunicare, quindi, si ha bisogno di stabilire un’intesa, acquisendo l'impressione di conoscere l'interlocutore. La creazione di un terreno comune è un processo che è influenzato dal media specifico e dalle sue potenzialità nel trasmettere informazioni analogiche e digitali.
